Common Spring Injuries and Prevention Strategies

What does spring mean to the general public? Sunshine, warm weather, outdoor activities, and sports.

What does spring mean in the orthopedic world? One word... INJURIES!

After being stuck inside all winter, when spring arrives we are all ready to get outside and do something, ANYTHING, just to be outside in the nice, warm weather. Many people go from being sedentary during the winter to being overactive once spring and summer arrive. Unfortunately, this can create the perfect setting for an accident or injury. Two of the most common orthopedic injuries are wrist fractures and ankle sprains.
One of the most common orthopedic injuries in the spring is wrist fractures. Wrist fractures often occur due to falling off of a moving object, such as a bike or skateboard, and putting your hands out to brace the fall. This causes a significant force to be placed on the wrist, which often results in a fracture. The best way to prevent this injury is to have children wear wrist splints or guards when using bicycles, skateboards, roller skates, rip stixs, and scooters. Also, discuss safety and have children avoid tricks such as jumps, flips, and wheelies which increases the risk of falls and injury.

Another orthopedic injury that is more common in the spring is ankle sprains.

Warm weather brings out flip-flops and sandals, which provide little to no support for your feet. Use caution when walking and be especially careful to avoid bumps potholes and uneven surfaces. Proper fitting shoes are crucial in helping to avoid sprains. Shoes that are too big or small can increase your risk of stumbling and incurring a sprain. Make sure straps and buckles are tightened properly and comfortably.

When you or your child are headed out to play basketball, baseball, soccer or just to go for a run or jog, make sure you are wearing the proper footwear. Jumping, running, and defending can lead to a rolled ankle. If you plan on playing make sure you are wearing an athletic shoe that is the correct size, and that you replace old footwear to maintain structure and integrity. Keep your shoes tied to avoid tripping that could lead to an ankle sprain.

Seven Springs Orthopedics is here to diagnose and treat all of your orthopedic injuries this spring and will work hard to get you back to enjoying fun in the sun!
